It is February 1942 and the United States is just months into its involvement in World War II. Sitting alone on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, Lolly Zawadski wishes she didn't have to go home. When a navy sailor, Joe Blanchard, unceremoniously stumbles into her solitude, her life will change forever. With only twenty-four blissful hours together and the promise meet at the seashore in Atlantic City when the war is over, Lolly blissfully goes home to wait, but about a month later, the letters stop coming and he never comes back.

In May 2005, Callie Nash finds herself racing to the Atlantic City boardwalk, summoned by a stranger's call that her Great Aunt Lolly is with him, disoriented and confused. It was not the news she needed to hear. She'd already lost her job and her fiancé. She can’t lose her favorite aunt too. And then her life is turned upside down even more when she finds her aunt sitting next to the handsomest man she has ever seen. But she'd sworn off men. They cannot be trusted.

When Callie and Lolly drop into his life, his burdens are lifted and he feels lighter than he has in years.

Through unexpected circumstances, Callie and Pete both learn they each have a family mystery to solve and decide to join forces.
